Editing
I believe the role of a good editor is to bring out the voice and intent of the writer. By matching editing style and depth as needed, I work (usually together with the author) to produce both the most effective and polished piece that is possible. My undergraduate degree in linguistics and editing and graduate degree in cognitive semiotics, along with years of experience, aids me in this goal.
Copy / Narrative
I've been primary (if not sole) editor on countless magazine pieces, blog posts, case studies -- in the case of my last role, almost anything that went out from the company that was written in English. As a freelancer, I also love editing people's fiction and creative nonfiction pieces.
Technical / Training
As editor, I've often served as not only the first point of contact but as "the safety net", editing and testing any writing or piece of training before the final version went out to the client, employee, or public, making sure it both communicated what it needed and reflected the current reality of the software or solution.
Academic
At both institutions I've attended, I've worked as an editor and research assistant for academic papers, which of course must match a certain format, tone, and sourcing criteria. In addition, at Aarhus University in particular, I worked as a freelance editor for theses, most of which were not written by native English speakers. In all cases, it is necessary to grasp the subject matter so one is able to make deeper and broader consistency and semantic adjustments as is necessary.
